  4.     At home the Japanese enjoy the soothing comfort of a hot ofuro,
  5. their traditional bath. On the road it's not so easy. Trying to
  6. re-create abroad their beloved steaming, full-tub soak, Japanese
  7. tourists have acquired a reputation for wreaking havoc on British
  8. hotel bathrooms.

  10.     London hotel managers claim that Japanese guests fill up the
  11. tubs, leave the taps on, then pull out the drain plugs to ensure
  12. a constant flow of clear water. The result: heavy damage from the
  13. overflow flooding through carpets and cascading into rooms below.
  14. Says Geoffrey Gold, general manager of the Swallow International
  15. Hotel, where 20% of the guests are Japanese: "It got to the point
  16. where an average of one bathroom a day was flooded." Some hotels
  17. are warning Japanese guests that flooders will face fines; others
  18. have made a simple but costly technological adjustment: installing
  19. drains in bathroom floors.
